Arts and Entertainment - Should I Study and Get a Degree In That?

The other day I was talking to a lady who had her PhD in dance. She was able to teach dance all over the world, and she became a professor. The reality is that many people who get degrees in dance don't end up making all that much money, and if they dance professionally it's hard to keep up as they get older, the younger generation just has too much energy and agility to compete with, and your knees only hold out for so long. Not just for dance, you can ask any professional athlete. Speaking of which very few ever make the grade, but let's talk about that for a second shall we?

You see if you get a degree in fine arts from college or from a major university, it isn't going to be cheap, and even with all that debt that you've racked up in tuition and student loans, the chances of paying it off are slim to none in many cases. Yes, it's true those student loans will be guaranteed by the US taxpayer perhaps, but they're still going to want their money back, and will come after you for it sooner or later. Not long ago someone told me that they wanted to get a degree in art and entertainment. They weren't sure what they wanted to do yet, they were still deciding. That's interesting isn't it?

There was a rather troubling article in the Wall Street Journal on February 18, 2013 titled; "A Degree Drawn in Red Ink - Graduates of Arts - Focused Schools Are Shown to Rack Up the Most Student Debt," by Ruth Simon and Rob Barry.

Well, it appears from this article that getting a degree in art or entertainment costs more than let's say getting an MBA or a law degree. That seems like a rather risky venture, and it's not that I don't believe that you should do what you love in life and something you have passion for, I do believe that to be true. But if you think you're going to pay off those expensive loans, think again, and consider your options more carefully. It's your choice in the end, but if you were worried about being broke while going to school, you may as well get used to it if you go for one of those high end art schools.

Well, perhaps what I'm asking is that you do a little soul-searching. Ask yourself if you really want a degree in art and to make it a career. Please consider all this and think on it.

If you ask a person what comes to mind when they think about Broadway theatre, they are likely to say is goes hand in hand with images of New York City and its Theater District. New York is certainly the mecca of all things Broadway. However, many major cities and metro regions across the United States have ornate play houses that host the hottest Broadway plays. It used to be that to see quality arts you had to be in New York City, but no more. Opera, ballet, musicals, productions and the works are seen across the country, making it more accessible to fans of Broadway... and their husbands.

Yes, that's right, their husbands. To be sure, not all husbands or men are fanatically against attending Broadway plays, in fact we all enjoy it equally. It does seem, however, that stubborn men, and especially husbands, protest the most when it comes to accompanying their wives to a musical of any sort. At least, this is the stereotype or stigma that goes along with a 'macho' man. So, ladies, how can you convince, bribe, encourage or drag your man to a play and help him actually enjoy himself? Here are a few tips:

Find Some Action: Choose a drama or action infused production or play. Les Miserables is a great play with some war scenes, fighting, explosions and the works. With such intense action, he may not mind the musical aspect and in fact, he may find it adds to the experience. Ask him to think of it as the soundtrack to his favorite war movie. Surprise Him: Make all the arrangements and include arts, entertainment and food and surprise him for the evening. Plan dinner or even a weekend getaway. Make A Deal: Offer to do something he enjoys or give him some space to enjoy the things he loves in return for taking you out so that he sees this is a give-and-take deal. Make It An Event: If he likes going to dinner and dancing, then get dressed up an have dinner, see the Broadway play and go dancing. Combining the evening with things you both enjoy will draw out the fun for both of you. The More The Merrier: Invite your couple friends to join you. Your man will be more comfortable around a group of guys he knows and your gal friends will be excited to get out too. Give A Little: The best relationships are those with two-way streets - meaning, if you're asking him to give the arts a try, make an honest effort to enjoy things he does. Perhaps this means you don a football jersey and watch a game on Sunday, but who knows, you may get in to the spirit of the game and enjoy yourself. Showing him that you are meeting him in the middle will make him want to do the same for you.

These tips are geared towards the arts but can really be applied to anything you want to get your spouse interested in. The best way to encourage someone to enjoy the arts is to do just that - encourage them with positive reinforcement and never negative or nagging words. Encourage and discover with them which plays, productions or musicals they enjoy and what parts they love the most. Was it the music, the storyline, the special affects, set, props and wardrobe - all of these are magnificent when you are experiencing them from the audience of one of America's fabulous theatres.

PROVINCIAL DAILY newspapers are the most reliable sources of information about forthcoming events; the Vancouver Sun, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, and Toronto Star are the most popular. Listings are usually published at least once a week. The Globe & Mail and National Post are produced in Toronto but are sold countrywide and have excellent arts sections containing reviews of the latest attractions. Tourist offices are helpful; some operators may assist in booking tickets. Visitor centers and hotel lobbies have weekly entertainment guides, such as Where, a magazine covering Vancouver. In Quebec, French-language entertainment is chronicled by two papers, La Presse and Le Devoir. Macleans is a national weekly magazine with arts coverage.

TICKET MASTER outlets are found in many shopping malls and represent major halls across the country. Tickets to venues in Quebec are available from Admission Network. Different offices cater to different sports and artistic events in each city. Most venues, however, can be contacted directly for tickets.

DISABLED VISITORS

MAJOR CANADIAN venues are well equipped to deal with wheelchair users. All interior halls contain ramps and restroom access. Parking lots will have designated disabled spaces nearby. A hearing loop system is available at Ottawa's National Arts Centre, and at most other major venues. Call ahead to check their availability. Outside ramps and elevators are provided to reach concerts halls and theaters at most large centers.
